Every patient with diabetes should undergo a diabetic foot assessment annually, this is to pick up any changes to the health of the feet. Diabetes can have an affect on feet by causing an impairment of blood flow to the feet, this is called ischaemia. Diabetes can also affect the nerve endings in the feet causing diminished sensations that in turn can lead to numbness. The Podiatrist will carry out a full diabetic foot assessment and help manage any foot problems that arise. It is better to be preventative and educate the patient how to monitor and maintain good foot health.
